Project: Search for the Confederate Submarine H.L. Hunley off Charleston Harbor, South Carolina
In 1995, M-AT in cooperation with Diversified Wibanks, conducted a marine remote sensing survey of a 27 square mile area in the Atlantic Ocean off of Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The survey was conducted for the adventure author Clive Cussler and the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA). As a result of the survey, on 3 May 1995 the team discovered the location of the confederate submarine H. L. Hunley that sank on 17 February 1864 after successfully attacking and sinking the U.S.S. Housatonic. The H. L. Hunley was the first submarine in history to sink a war ship in battle.
The historic submarine was eventually raised and is now undergoing conservation at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center, North Carleston, South Carolina.
