Project: Underwater Archaeological Investigations of Middle Keys Shipwreck Alligator, Adelaide Baker, Thunderbolt, and Sueco de Arizon Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Marathon, Florida

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Marathon, Florida, and NOAA, Sanctuaries and Reserves Division, contracted M-AT to conduct underwater archaeological investigations of four shipwrecks located within the Middle Keys portion of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary for the potential inclusion on the proposed Shipwreck Trail. These shipwrecks include the Adelaide Baker – a wooden bark wrecked in 1889; the Alligator – a U.S. Navy schooner wrecked in 1822; the Sueco de Arizón – a Spanish galleon sunk by a hurricane in 1733; and the RV Thunderbolt– a converted World War II mine planter sunk as an artificial reef by the Florida Keys Artificial Reef Association in 1986.
